Lightbulbs For some time back in February of 2019, I found myself seriously struggling to get out of bed in the morning. I didn’t know if it was because I was binge-watching Younger till the wee hours of the night, if I was suffering from a vitamin D deficiency, or if I just wasn’t feeling motivated (probably a combo of all three).
Luckily, my birthday also happened to be that month, and my brother gifted me the Philips Hue Multicolor Starter Kit, a set of smart lightbulbs that can be controlled with any Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, or Google Assistant speaker. At the time that I got them, I didn’t really know how they’d be useful. But after reading some online reviews and doing a bit more research, I realized that they could be the solution to my snoozing problem!

The Hue bulbs can be installed just like any regular lightbulb. The set I got came with four bulbs, so I put them in my bedside lamp, the lamp on my desk, and in my kitchen. Because I live in a studio apartment, I can see all of these lights from my bed.
To get full use out of the Hue bulbs, you need to download the Hue app and pair it with your lightbulbs, which takes just a few minutes. Once I completed that setup, I started playing around. I instantly liked that I could change the color of these bulbs to literally any shade! The app is equipped with a color wheel that allows you to choose your preferred hue for each bulb or preset colors and brightness levels that can energize you or chill you out.
The coolest thing that I discovered is that through the app, I could sync the bulbs to gradually illuminate my apartment as my morning wake-up call. Now when I go to bed, I can tell Alexa to turn off my lights and set my alarm, allowing me to wake up to a light-filled room without the need to hit snooze even once!
During the time that I’ve spent stuck indoors recently, this color-changing feature has been incredibly useful — I can easily switch up the vibe in my studio to transition me out of my work day into other activities. If I want to do a livestream yoga class, I can dim the bulbs for an instantly calm environment. But if I want to throw a social-distanced rager for my next Zoom happy hour, I can turn each light to a different color so it feels like I’m in a club. The options truly are endless!

Closing Argument: Whether you struggle with waking up in the morning or you just want to switch up the ambiance at home, Philips Hue smart lightbulbs are an easy way to get started in your smart home life. Plus, they’re LED bulbs, which means they’ll last you a long time — I’ve been using mine for over a year now and they’re still going strong.
